Learning Outcome

By the end of this session, you should be able to demonstrate understanding of how HIV and AIDS is treated.

Treatment

A person can only know if he or she has HIV after a test in the hospital. For children, the test can be done if they are taken to the hospital by a parent or a guardian.

Remember, HIV kills the white blood cells in the body. White blood cells protect the body from diseases. If the HIV kills the white blood cells in a person, the person is likely to get sick.

Today, there are medicines given to people living with HIV to protect them from getting sick.

These medicines given to the children and adults living with HIV are called Anti-retrovirals (ARVs). A child or an adult taking ARVs has to take them according to the doctor’s advice.
